Social Soul – Your Twitter Stream as Digital Installation
Description
Social Soul is an immersive, digital installation. It deals with the question: "How does it feel to be in another social media stream?". The aim was to translate a Twitter stream into a large, accessible structure and make it tangible as a 360-degree stream of monitors, mirrors and sound. At the same time, it served as a matchmaking tool at the TED2014 conference to bring participants into contact with one another via their social media streams.
The installation begins with the stream of the person entering the installation. In the next step, an algorithm picks up streams from other participants and searches for an individual “Twitter soulmate”. After exiting the installation, both conference participants receive a tweet that is intended to encourage them to meet and exchange ideas offline.
The accompanying sound is a mixture of generative sounds and music composed live.
This experience was developed by the artists Lauren McCarthy and Kyle McDonald in collaboration with the MKG agency for Delta Air Lines at TED2014.
