Description

Traditional fireworks are forbidden in many cities due to the high degree of air and environmental pollution. This has led to an increasing number of alternatives and more sustainable solutions, to which Studio Roosegarde also wanted to contribute. The result is SPARK, a poetic performance of thousands of light sparks that float through the air organically.

Inspired by glow worms, flocks of birds and the starry sky, the installation is designed to not only be environmentally friendly but also to offer a magical shared experience. Through the combination of design and technology, the swarms of sparks, generated by particles of biodegradable materials, move without a sound through the constantly changing wind. Visitors can admire the drifting lights in cloud formations of up to 50 × 30 × 50 metres.

SPARK is intended to provoke amazement, as well as thought. The links between man and nature, as well as communal traditions, are to be celebrated and fostered in a novel manner. It is a sustainable alternative for events and important moments of togetherness.

The performance saw its premiere in 2022 in Bilbao-Biscaya. It was followed by performances in Aix-en-Provence, Madrid, Auckland, Jordan, Melbourne, London, Leeuwarden, Tokyo and Pesaro.
