ZEYREK ÇINILI HAMAM
Description
Zeyrek Cinili Hamam, a 16th-century masterpiece by the architect Sinan, has been turned into a hybrid venue comprising a bathhouse, museum and event space over the course of a twelve-year renovation. The scenography and exhibition by ATELIER BRÜCKNER preserve the historical substance and at the same time create a modern world of experience where tradition and innovation merge.
The exhibition is divided into four themed areas that show the history and culture of the hamam. “The Story of Hamam” in the foyer with historical insights into the architecture and restoration provides an introduction. The interior courtyard stages the historical water supply to the hamam with the light sculpture “Journey of Water, Smoke and Steam”. In the “Tiles Gallery”, interactive media highlight the beauty of the Iznik tile fragments, while the “Bathing Culture Gallery” illuminates the ritual heritage of hammam culture with a collection of 70 traditional bathing clogs.
The scenography combines traditional materials with modern elements. Dark grey steel, corten steel and Marmara marble emphasise the historical architecture. A targeted lighting design creates impressive accents that mimic the movements of water. The immersive atmosphere is enhanced by sound landscapes by Youmna Saba.
Alongside the unique combination of a functioning hamam, an exhibition and an event space, the project brings together a harmonious balance of historical authenticity and innovative technologies. Interactive media installations reconstruct the original tile décor, while the visual language of the venue features the brand identity, which was developed in cooperation with H5 Paris, with inscriptions and graphic elements. An interactive app and accompanying website extend the experience into digital space.
